 Devis

1943 torpedoed and sunk off Sicily while trooping; loss of 52 lives.

The Devis, serving as an auxiliary transport, was conveying troops through the Mediterranean on July 5th, 1943, when she was attacked and damaged by enemy aircraft S.E. of Majorca. The Devis was in convoy and at first it was hoped that she might be saved but later she was torpedoed by submarine U-593 and eventually sank. There were no casualties among the crew, but 52 of the troops were killed.

Revolutionary in design for the time, with the funnel being incorporated in the superstructure and housed a small part of the accommodation.
