 Walter H. Wilson

[San Francisco Historical Photograph Collection]

The 4-masted barque was named after Walter H. Wilson, the fourth partner in the shipyard.

Sold to Johan Edgar, Liverpool in 1901, she was renamed California.

March 1911 she was sold to Robert Mattsson, Mariehamn. She was then the largest sailing vessel in Finland.

The California foundered off Newcastle, England, in 1913.

She left South Shields 14th January 1913 under tow bound for Rotterdam. A sudden south easterly gale arose, and when attempting to turn back to the harbour the hawser broke and the California drifted on to the rocks of St. Mary Island. Eight men were washed overboard and lost their lives.
