[Titanic Belfast]

Until 1906 a portion of the unsalable house refuse (300 tons daily) was taken to one of Dublin's less pleasing attractions - the Eblana hopper barge moored in the river facing the Custom House at the Tara Street railway station. There the noxious heaps would gather daily pending removal out to sea. Considering that the dustbins (one for each tenement house) were also used as receptacles for all kinds of slops and filth and that loads of manure were frequently disposed of via the barge, the crosswinds must have put many an admirer of Gandon's Custom House to flight.
