On the 9th July 1941 when on route from Ellesmere Port for Table Bay carrying a cargo of military stores and 200 bags of mail she was torpedoed by German submarine U-98 and sunk off the Portugese Coast.
 
Out of a crew of 79, 68 including Capt D.A.McCallum, were killed.
