On June 29th, 1942, the ocean liner Waiwera, was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-754, 450 miles North of the Azores .
 
Eight persons were killed, Capt. Andrews was among the 97survivors, who were picked up by the Oregon Express and landed at New York.
