 Sindia

The Sindia was the world's largest four masted, steel hull, sailing vessel , it was owned by John D. Rockefeller.

The ship traveled from New York to the Orient transporting oil and returning to New York with goods from China and Japan. Returning from the far east in 1901, the Sindia ran into a storm off the coast of New Jersey, and was blown ashore in Ocean City, New Jersey.

On this particular trip, the vessel carried extremely valuable cargo such as priceless works of porcelain, bronzes, jade, ivory and china. In 1901, technology was not available to repair the ship so it sank slowly into the sand and was eventually abandoned along with over 200,00 artifacts.
