Bayern was layed up at Neaples on 4th August, 1914 and seized by the Italians on 12th June, 1915 and renamed Alexandria.
 
As Alexandria she was sunk on 2nd May, 1917 100 nautical miles north of Bengazi by the German submarine UC-74.
