The picture on the front cover is of the M V Gascony as she entered New York harbour in the winter of 1943, This great little ship survived 27 torpedo attacks during the war.
 
The Master was Captain H.G. Whittle, a Liverpudlian. He was short and stocky and was a very courageous efficient Master - as the story will unfold. M.V. Gascony was 4,716 gross tons.  Port of Registry Liverpool.  Built by A. McMillan at Dumbarton in 1925 for the MacIver Fleet. Her three sister ships being the Lombardy, Saxony and Brittany. In 1932 she was transferred to the Royal Mail Lines.
 
She survived the war until 1958 when she was sold for scrap and went to the breakers yard.
