The Afghanistan was a triple first for Harland and Wolff, Govan, she was the first ship launched in 1957, she was the first ore-carrier built there and she was the first ore-carrier in the fleet of the Hindustan Steam Shipping Company, who are managed by the Common Brothers, Newcastle.
 
The Afghanistan was the last of three ships to be launched by Clyde firms on Thursday 14 February. The others being the motor coaster Parera, built by George Brown, Greenock  and the tunnel steamer Valiant built by Yarrow & Company, Glasgow for the Government of Nigeria.   
 
She was sold and renamed Levantino in 1972.
 
Renamed to Paxo in 1981
