On the 30th October 1942 when on route from Pepel - Freetown (16 Oct) - Belfast Lough - Port Talbot in Convoy SL-125 and carrying a cargo of 5,500 tons of iron ore when she was torpedoed by German submarine U-604 and sunk N of Madeira.
 
The master, 42 crew members and six gunners were picked up by the British merchant Baron Elgin and landed at Madeira.
