History

Step back in time and spend a leisurely afternoon gliding along the River Wey on a horse-drawn narrow boat and admire the beauty and tranquillity of the Surrey countryside. Our trip on the narrow boat Iona, pulled by one of the Godalming Packetboat heavy horses, will traverse both river and canal and pass through a lock in the course of its journey and make for a delightful way to discover the River Wey Navigations. The “Iona” is a full length (72ft) narrow boat with traditional painting. She began her working life in 1935 as Bellerephon carrying various cargoes along the Grand Union Canal and since 1985 has been a regular sight on the River Wey. She is a star in her own right having been used in the 1964 British comedy film The Bargee starring Harry H Corbett, Ronnie Barker and Eric Sykes and in 1969 she appeared in an episode of Coronation Street.
